Suriya plays the role of a firebrand advocate with ease. It is as if he is not only performing the lines written by the director but also believes in every word and gesture he gives in this film.

In a scene from Jai Bheem, a group of tribals meet a police office, which is leading a commission of inquiry into the disappearances of three missing tribals whom the police were questioning in a theft case. A man tells him that he was once arrested by the police just for greeting.

The other tells him how he was arrested just because he tried to scare them. A woman narrates how her husband was forced to confess a crime he did not commit after the police started molesting him. A young boy mentions that the police picked him up simply because they could not find his father, and how that one incident made him a permanent suspect at school. These people are clearly cursed if they did, and damned if they didn’t!

This scene is an echo of the opening scene of the film. We see that many prisoners are getting released from jail. Some policemen from nearby police stations are waiting. As each prisoner comes out, he is asked his caste. If they mention the name of an influential caste, they are asked to leave. But those who belong to the Scheduled Castes or Scheduled Tribes are asked to stand in a corner, only for the waiting police to take them as suspects in several cases that remain unsolved in their station. When some of them complain that they have little to impose on matters, they are told that they can accuse some of committing more than one crime!

With scenes like these, Jai Bheem powerfully captures the abuse and humiliation inflicted on the underprivileged by those in power and the kind of defiance it will take to get them justice. Like Visaranai and the more recent Kavalathurai Ungal Nanban, this film too is a scathing critique of police brutality.
